On Reflection

On Reflection is a series of reflected portraits which seeks to depict the ever-changing and circular relationship between our emotional and rational selves. Pictures VI and VII show the two aspects in direct opposition – muted daylight falls on strong horizontals and verticals while blurred, richly-coloured, visceral reflections erupt from the mirror. Meanwhile Picture II shows a more even balance between the two aspects as they start to merge into one another – the face peers out from the grass and shadow, buried and almost lost in its surroundings.
This circular relationship can be interpreted in other terms, being as relevant to distinctions between instinct and reason, natural and manufactured, order and chaos, as it is to the complex relationship between an individual and his environment.
