Under Cover
The Under Cover series consists of three images taken in the shady undergrowth of natural woodland. I appear in the pictures myself, if only as a hand lost in the shade or an item left behind, but in this way I invest the pictures with my own energy and create a breathing space within each static image.
A grid of wire mesh contrasts with the tangle of vegetation that grows around it, the artificial light of a torch has a surreal glow in the half-light beneath the trees… I aim to forge a dynamic in which all possibilities co-exist.
Using contrasting lighting conditions and long exposures I seek to capture a mystical quality of light, in which I resist the use of photography as an exact record of reality. And by showing my own presence I acknowledge the artifice that lies behind every picture’s creation.
